The Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 have come to an end. As every Olympian leaves Beijing to get back to their usual grind, let’s take a look at this year’s Olympic medal tally.

Firstly, with a whopping thirty-seven medals out of which sixteen are gold, Norway is at the top of the standings. Then, Germany follows with twenty-seven medals, with twelve golden victories.

Moving on, in third and fourth place are the People’s Republic of China and the USA, respectively. China very narrowly beat the USA with one more gold medal to the USA’s eight gold medals.

However, in the total medal count, Team USA is ahead of China by a total of ten medals, all places combined.

How did China beat the USA in gold medals at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022?

The medal tally at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 was quite close between China and the USA. In fact, the two nations were tied with eight gold medals, each with just two days remaining at the Games.

However, at the free skating pair event on February 19th, Sui Wenjing and Han Cong secured the gold medal. The two stood highest atop the podium, having earned China their ninth gold medal.

On the other hand, Brandon Frazier and Alexa Knierim of the USA finished seventh, failing to medal. In fact, the team right ahead of the sixth spot was incidentally a Chinese pair as well.

Thus, even though the USA, in total, has finished with ten medals more than China, the latter finishes higher on the medal tally charts owing to one gold medal more than the USA.

DIVE DEEPER: ‘I Have Followed the Rules’: Vincent Zhou Lashes Out After Not Being Allowed to March With Team USA at Closing Ceremony of Beijing Winter Olympics 2022

This is because the International Olympic Committee only used the number of gold medals won by a nation’s athletes to calculate the final medal standings. Moreover, they only consider the number of silver and/or bronze medals when two nations tie in gold medals.

Thus, had China failed to secure a gold medal in their pair skating event on February 19th, and even finished with a silver, team USA would have been sitting in the third spot of the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 medal tally.

Vincent Zhou unable to march alongside Team USA at the closing ceremony

American figure skater Vincent Zhou helped the USA’s medal tally through his contribution to the team event early in the Games. However, soon after, Zhou tested positive for covid-19. Consequently, he isolated himself and withdrew from all individual events.

Even though Zhou left isolation a few days ago and was healthy enough to put on a beautiful performance at the exhibition gala, his woes hadn’t finished.
