22-year-old Nathan Chen just won his first gold medal at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. Chen surpassed the likes of Yuma Kagiyama and Yuzuru Hanyu to win his first gold medal in figure skating.
In fact, this gold medal was very much Nathan Chen’s redemption for his 2018 performance. Four years ago, Chen had only managed to win a bronze medal. Now, having won his gold, Chen is the subject of adoration and respect across the world.
Among the celebrations and ever exceeding praises, he now reveals how his mother reacted to her son winning the Olympic gold medal.

Nathan Chen opens up about his mother’s reaction to his gold medal victory
Nathan Chen has stated that he would never have been able to go as far as he has without his mother. Aside from the many sacrifices she made, it was also Chen’s mother who drove him to all his figure skating lessons.
Notably, his mother was an integral part of his athletic growth from the very beginning. “Since day one, 3 years old, I stepped on the ice, and she’s been by my side ever since,” Chen stated in an interview.

Chen revealed his mother’s reaction when he won his gold medal at the Beijing Winter Olympics. First, he shared that his mother was not very emotionally expressive.
Chen stated that when he held up his medal during the award ceremony, his mother had been watching, and stated that she “got emotional“.
“She’s definitely not that type of person,” he said, referring to his mom’s reserved emotions.

Thus, it was all the more rewarding for the newly crowned gold medalist to be able to elicit that response out of her. “It was really touching to hear that she was so happy,” Chen expressed.

Last year, on the occasion of Mother’s Day, Chen had taken to Instagram to share with the world his gratitude and adoration for his mom.
Chen and his mother had taken a weekend trip in their old Toyota Prius. Thus, it took Nathan Chen down memory lane. It made him “reminisce on the thousands of miles and countless hours,” his mother spent taking him to his classes, day after day, from state to state.

Applauding his mother, Chen felt emotional thinking about how “tirelessly she supported (him) in (his) skating career.”
“Without her support, I never would have made it to where I am now,” Chen expressed.
Certainly, it is heartwarming to see the Olympic gold medalist pay respect to and applaud his mother every time he discusses his own success, reminding everyone how she is an undeniable part of it.
