Elana Meyers Taylor is one of the most decorated female bobsledders ever. With five Olympics medals and two World Championships, Taylor truly is a historic player.

Not only did Taylor win a bronze medal at the two-woman bobsled event, but she also secured a silver medal for the Monobob event. Thus, with her victory, she also got the opportunity to award the Order of Ikkos medal, a special coaching acknowledgment for all Olympic and Paralympic medalists.

For her Order of Ikkos, she chose none other than her own husband, Nic Taylor.

Elana Meyers Taylor took to Instagram today to explain what an Order of Ikkos is. She described how after winning an Olympic medal for Team USA, one gets the opportunity to award an Order of Ikkos medal to someone.

The recipient of the Order of Ikkos could be one of your coaches or someone who significantly contributed to your victory. Thus, for her two-woman bobsledding bronze medal from the Beijing Winter Olympics, she chose Nic Taylor, her fellow Olympic bobsledder, and her husband.

In fact, Meyers herself believed that it would be an arduous task for Nic. After all, he had to train her postpartum and through a pandemic, too. Nevertheless, her husband got a chiropractic degree through years of experience and worked hard with her relentlessly.

Elana Meyers Taylor describes how her husband “helped (her) battle back from serious back, knee and shoulder injuries”. In fact, during this time, Nic developed her individual bob start that many would later copy, according to Elana.

“Although he is my everything as a husband, as a coach, there’s no denying what he’s accomplished,” Meyers wrote. Finally, she expressed her gratitude to her coach and husband. “Thank you Coach Dr. Taylor- couldn’t have done this without you!”

It is truly the highest honor for an athlete to be able to hold their nation’s flag with pride. Moreover, at the grandest sporting stage of all, the honor compounds massively.

It was curler John Shuster and speed skater Brittany Bowe who held the USA flag in the opening ceremony. In fact, Bowe had replaced 37-year-old Elana Meyers Taylor, as the latter had tested positive for the coronavirus before the ceremony.

However, towards the end, with a bronze and a silver medal under her belt, Meyers got the opportunity yet again. “That’s an incredible honor,” she had stated. “It’s humbling and overwhelming,” Taylor had described the feeling of becoming the official Team USA flag bearer.
