22-year-old American figure skater Nathan Chen is at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. Having won a Bronze medal in the team event at the 2018 Olympics, Chen has performed in the men’s singles short program and free skating event so far.

As he won a Gold Medal against the likes of Japanese 2-time Olympic medalist Yuzuru Hanyu, all eyes were on Chen as he took to the ice. In fact, just yesterday, he set a new men’s short program world record.

However, Twitterati can’t seem to be able to handle the sight of Nathan Chen’s outfit for the free skating event. Thus, even though he won his first Gold Medal today, social media decided that Chen’s outfit was definitely not a winner.

Twitterati ‘flames’ outfit design for Nathan Chen at the Olympics

As Nathan Chen began his routine at the free skating event at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2020, Twitter couldn’t seem to wrap its head around why he was wearing the outfit he was.

Even though popular American designer Vera Wang is the one who designed his outfit, Twitterati seem to have no love for the design. Naturally, the tweets and the jokes have begun flowing in. In fact, a Twitter user posted Chen’s outfit today, writing “another day, another horrendous outfit for Nathan Chen,” on Twitter.

Clearly, the sentiments are reciprocated across Twitter, as other users piled on express dislike and disbelief over his outfit. Moreover, another user wrote, “if Nathan Chen wins a Gold (medal) with that ugly f***ing shirt, I’m actually gonna be so mad”.

Another user stated how “the community needs to have a conversation” with whoever is designing Nathan Chen’s outfits. “He skates amazingly but the costume just doesn’t do it,” they expressed.

Furthermore, there were even those who compared Nathan’s look to that of a Cheeto!

Additionally, when designer Vera Wang described how she felt privileged to design Nathan Chen’s outfits, a user expressed, “I think she’s mad at him,” joking about how Wang might purposely be putting Chen in outfits that do not hold a candle to those of his competitors.

Moreover, a reporter for The Verge stated Vera Wang is “sick for this”. She also compared Chen’s outfits to a “zumiez 2014 galaxy print costume”.

Perhaps one of the most hilarious tweets was when another person compared Chen’s outfit to that of a “TikTok room projector light ad”.

Clearly, Twitter has no love for Chen’s choice of outfit, even as he stood atop the podium with the Gold.

This was the first Olympic Gold Medal for Cheng, as the 22-year-old skated his best today. Alongside him, Yuma Kagiyama and Shoma Uno of Japan won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Chen went into the free skating event with a humongous lead of 6 points. This was all thanks to his record-breaking performance at the short program. On the other hand, Chen’s victory spelled defeat for Japanese figure skating star Yuzuru Hanyu. Hanyu had been hoping to secure a third consecutive Olympic title, but finished fourth in the standings.
