Mikaela Shiffrin had gone through some heartbreak before today’s Super G event. Her bid to become the first athlete to score 3 alpine skiing medals saw a huge hit after her runs in the slalom and giant slalom, but the chance to redeem is high. With Shiffrin’s run in the super-G event yet to come to an end, there still remained the possibility that Shiffrin could pull something out of the bag.

And what is the Olympic spirit if not to deliver under pressure? Shiffrin did just that. With it all on the line, Shiffrin put together one of her best runs this Olympics to deliver a solid performance.

Shiffrin has not seen too much success at the Beijing Olympics so far. With early exits in both the Slalom and giant slalom events, Shiffrin would’ve been forgiven if she had lost resolve. But that’s just not what winners do. Despite the super-G not being Shiffrin’s event, she put together one of the most technically solid runs in the competition to finish out her Olympic campaign.

Shiffrin saw her super-G campaign end with her in 8th place, about 0.8 seconds back from the pack with a showing she will be proud of. Despite slipping earlier on in the run, Shiffrin came back to complete the slope and only do it with little time lost.

Shiffrin has had a disappointing Winter Olympics overall with early crashes ruling her out of her two favored events. With no medals to return to the slalom and giant slalom events, Shiffrin would have already lost half the mental battle.

But she truly showed her mettle with a solid run in the Super-G out of the gates. Despite an initial slip, Shiffrin came back strong to finish the event placed 8th, only 0.8 seconds behind the pack.

Shiffrin seems to have gotten the monkey off her back by at least finishing a race after crashing out of both her signature events. The super-G is a speed-based event that has not been Shiffrin’s focus with the more technical pursuits being what she is after. However, she may take solace from the fact that she completed the course. Which is a better finish than her two past events.

Shiffrin set out some solid intent right out the gates. She saw her speed go as high as 70 miles per hour in the first few turns of the slope, uncharacteristic of her highly technical events. She, however, completed the rest of the course at roughly 60 miles an hour. Shiffrin was clearly there to win it despite the Super G not being her main event.

And as an athlete, Shiffrin will be looking to win again to put these losses in the rearview as fast as possible. She has shown that she definitely has the mettle to perform on a world stage before, and there is nothing holding her back from becoming possibly one of the most accomplished alpine skiers of all time.
