The final day of the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 did not bring a medal to Team USA or Mikaela Shiffrin. Shiffrin was part of the US team that competed in the combined team event in the hopes of a medal before leaving.

However, in their small final against Team Norway, the US lost by a very small margin, ending up fourth. Thus, narrowly missing out on a team medal, the team, including Mikaela Shiffrin, will now leave Beijing.

Steven Nyman, World Cup ski racer for the U.S. Ski Team, took to Twitter to express his disappointment in the rules. The event saw USA’s Paula Moltzan defeat Noway’s Maria Therese by 0.74 seconds in the first round. This gave the USA a 1-0 lead.

However, things turned around when Fabian Wilkens and Thea Louise both won against Tommy Ford and Mikaela Shiffrin, respectively. This put Norway in the lead by one round.

Thus, it boiled down to River Radamus’ head-to-head against Timon Haugan, where he had to win by 0.4 seconds for the victory. Interestingly, Haugan did not finish the event, giving River the win.

Despite the equal 2-2 result, it was Norway who won the tie-up. Nyman took to Twitter to call the rules “a joke”. “Norway doesn’t finish but they still win?” he asked in his Tweet.

Nyman had trouble understanding the rules

Even though Team USA was trailing by one round against Team Norway, River Radamus tied the event at 2-2. Sadly, the rules of the tie-break were such that Nyman could not quite understand them.

According to the rules, in the event of a tie-break, the times of the fastest man and woman of either team would be combined. Then, the combined times are compared against each other.

Paula Moltzan and River Radamus’ combined time was a total of 48.76 seconds. However, the combined time for Norway’s Maria Therese and Timon Haugan was 48.34, beating out Team USA’s best combined time by 0.42 seconds.

Consequently, Norway won the event and won the bronze medal. When Nyman understood the rules, he tweeted saying his rules are fair. He also stated that the FIS (International Ski Federation) app was down, owing to which he was unable to check the exact times.

Nevertheless, he called the USA “a solid team”, stating that it was “a lot of fun to watch” the event. Then, he praised Team USA, saying they “put on a solid performance and put themselves in a place for a medal”.
