It’s hard not to feel disappointed when you gave your everything and still end up losing your dream. The Japanese legend, Yuzuru Hanyu, failed to accomplish his dream of performing a perfect quad axel and winning his third consecutive gold medal in the Olympics. He finished fourth in the men’s figure skating short programme event.

He had a pretty terrible start in the first round with 18.82 points difference from the champion Nathan Chen. The only way for Hanyu to win the gold was to perform a perfect quad axle, which he had planned for the finals. However, while performing today, he fell twice. Once, while landing in his failed quad axel attempt and then he fell at quad Salchow jump as well.

Yuzuru Hanyu breaks into tears

While talking to the press in the post event interview, the legend broke down into tears. He said, “I trained so hard and it was painful and I don?t think the pain has been rewarded. The outcome wasn?t what I was aiming for, in terms of winning or losing but I think I didn?t have anything else to give?”

One could almost feel the pain and rage in his voice. He further added, “Tbh, I?m disappointed. I spent the last 3 days wondering why (my training) hasn?t been rewarding?”?

He did his best

One thing he should be really proud of is that, against all odds, he gave his best shot. The champion attempted the most difficult jump in figure skating and nearly got it. From the eighth position in the first round, he finished at fourth in the finals. Truly, he is a brave athlete who dared to do the impossible.

He may have failed at winning the third consecutive gold in Olympics, but for every person who has seen him skating, he is a champion. Though it was Nathan Chen’s moment of glory at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022, history will remember Yuzuru Hanyu as the man who gave all he had for his dream.
