World peace is certainly going through tough times amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Though the Russian and Belarusian athletes are already banned from the Beijing Winter Paralympics 2022, still there are some players who have ties with the nations involved in the crisis.
While competing in the Paralympics, the Ukrainian-born American skier Oksana Masters would perhaps think about the war going on in her birth land right now. Peace, friendship, and healthy relationships between the nations are what the Olympics symbolize, and in these trying times, its role towards world peace becomes even more crucial.

The six-time Paralympian Oksana Masters would look for yet another gold medal to add to her list of four Paralympic gold medals. She is an incredible athlete who has won 10 Paralympic medals in both Summer and Winter Paralympics.

A day before the start of Beijing Winter Paralympics, she wrote on her twitter handle, “It’s the stars and strips 🇺🇸 that keeps my Ukrainian🇺🇦 heart beating. I’ve always been proud of where I come from. And I can’t wait to race for the two countries that make me whole.”

Ukrainian born American Paralympic champion
Oksana Masters was born in Ukraine, where she got exposed to the radiation from Chernobyl nuclear power plant. She grew up with several health issues, including an amputated leg. At the age of 7, Oksana was adopted by Gay Masters and has been an American citizen ever since. Her story is full of challenges. However, in the end, she transformed her life struggles into an unforgettable victory.

Everything she is today, she gives credit for it to her mom. Oksana said, “My mom, who fought for two years — for two years!! — to get me out of Ukraine. My mom who has opened up so many of life’s doors for me — so that I could walk through them and fall in love with the world. My mom, who is the reason I’m here.”
