The Paralympics are an opportunity for sportspersons to have themselves noticed. Perhaps even more so for top athletes like Oksana Masters, who’ve made winning a habit. The podium never seems to elude Oksana Masters. Winning her 12th Paralympics medal, Masters has started the Paralympics on top form and seems to be moving along just fine.

This was Masters’ second medal in Beijing after delivering the US contingent with their first Gold win on Saturday.

Masters is a multi-sport athlete and aced the course en route to her winning performance. She raced to a silver medal in the Para cross-country skiing women’s long-distance sitting race, finishing at 43:38.8 on Sunday at the Zhangjiakou National Biathlon Centre.

While Saturday’s win marked her 11th Paralympic medal and 5th gold at the event, Sunday yielded her 12th at the same venue. Her last medal before Beijing came at Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, where she won gold medals at road cycling events in the time trial and road race.

Oksana Masters’ glorious performance continues

With her record win, Masters moves into an elite company. Masters is now tied in the standings for third all-time among US women; behind only alpine skiers, Sarah Will, and Sarah Billmeier. The two have 13 medals each and lead the athlete, who may yet surpass them.

Masters will compete in Beijing for a few more medals and stand a chance to snag a few too, and she may well stand to break the standing barrier the next time she is written about.
