How does the event work?

In the selection for which horses compete in the Breeders’ Cup races, several ways steps are necessary. The first is winning a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race. The second is total points based on performance in major races throughout the year, with points awarded as follows:

  • Grade 1: 10 points for the winner, 6 for second place, and 4 for third place.
  • Grade 2: 6 points for the winner, 4 for second place, and 2 for third place.
  • Grade 3: 4 points for the winner, 2 for second place, and 1 for third place.

The third method involves a panel of experts selecting a maximum of 14 horses for each Breeders’ Cup Championship race. These selections include Challenge race winners, horses earning points through Graded Stakes, and those chosen by the panel to ensure the highest quality competition.

Field Selection System

Each Breeders’ Cup Championship race can have a maximum of 14 starters. In case of oversubscription, a field selection system ranks horses by wins in Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races, a point system, and the judgment of a panel of racing experts. Horses must accumulate a minimum number of points in Graded Stakes races to receive an automatic selection. The system ensures high-quality competition in Championship races.

Graded Stakes Points

Specific point values are assigned to first, second, and third-place finishes in Graded Stakes races in the United States and Canada from January 1 through the pre-entry deadline. The points system varies by the grade of the race. Grade 1 races earn the most points, followed by Grade 2 and Grade 3 races.

In case of oversubscription, the Panel decides the order of preference based on points, ensuring a competitive field. Horses can pre-enter a maximum of two races, with preferences indicated at the time of pre-entry. If a horse isn’t ranked among the top 14 in its first-choice race and didn’t win a Challenge race in its second-choice division, its points from Graded Stakes races are used to determine its ranking in the second-choice race.

Ties at Pre-entry

If two or more horses are tied for the seventh highest number of Graded Stakes points at pre-entry in an oversubscribed race, the Panel decides their ranking. Horses not selected are then ranked by the Panel’s discretion.
