Talk of the rankest bulls and their riders, one never misses out on christening the name of JB Mauney. The bull riding legend is known for conquering the stages of PBR and PRCA and for doing so with the most challenging of the bovine athletes. Bushwacker or Bruiser, Mauney has proven his presence excellently throughout his career. Today, a reminiscence back on yet another gutsy ride months after retirement, only adds a feather to the icon’s career.

In September last year, JB Mauney announced his retirement from the sport stemming from an injury. Bull riding athletes, circuits, and enthusiasts did not hold back in cherishing the glistening career Mauney held for years. However, while the on-ground records filled the news, the rider’s recent reflection showcased his rather formidable skills away from the spotlights.

Dale Brisby, the renowned cowboy recently took to his Instagram to share a clip of JB Mauney talking of a ride back from 2019. In the former’s YouTube video named ‘Rodeo Time 164’ Mauney could be seen riding a bull without much safety gear. Work gloves, flank rope, and Tennis shoes are all equipment the bull riding legend adorned on his spontaneous ride. “I had to even fight him myself, JB recalls in the recent clip. The flank rope was sliding through my work gloves. It was getting looser and looser as I was riding him, Mauney adds. Nonetheless, the icon established a perfect ride and an equally impressive landing.

“That would be the rankest bull ride I have seen with a flank rope,” is what Dale Brisby remarks from behind the camera. And the cowboy wasn’t alone. Many under the post agreed to the sport JB Mauney was. Saying how the legend was still better than most without much gear, enthusiasts once again highlighted the charm of Mauney on the grounds.

What made the icon the mainstay he is?

JB Mauney joined the PBR and PRCA circuits back in 2005 and 09 respectively. By 2013, the cowboy was riding without a helmet to adorn a cowboy hat in his performances. The same year, Mauney became the world and finals event champion, further adding one more in 2015. But what highlighted the champion’s career-best was his rides on the most renowned bulls.  From 2007-2018, he rode every World Champion Bull and recorded his highest score atop Bushwacker; aboard whom only 2 riders have ever been successful.

One take at a time

I was a little kid when my dad brought home a second horse out of his sheer love for the creatures. The excitement to ride and care for one from the first moment still gets to me as I watch the horses in action today; covering the intensity on the field. However, along the way of being immersed in the wider ground of equestrian sports, rodeo and bull riding lingered in the sight.
