After Nathan Chen’s Shocking Withdrawal Who Will Take His Place at the World Championships?

The figure skating world was in for a shock when Nathan Chen announced something really unexpected. Chen has announced that he won’t participate in the Figure Skating World Championships. This is highly unusual as Chen is the defending champion. However, Chen has revealed that he hasn’t yet recovered from a prior injury. Therefore, he doesn’t want to take any risks with his health further.

Chen will be replaced by Camden Pulkinen in the United States Figure Skating Team. The 21-year-old American figure skater is a national junior champion. Pulkinen will now have a good chance at the medal after Chen’s withdrawal. At the same time, Chen’s rival Yuzur Hanyu has also revealed he won’t participate. This will open the doors for new figure skaters like Camden.

Camden Pulkinen to replace Nathan Chen at the World Championships

Born in Arizona, Camden Pulkinen is a senior figure skater. In 2018, Camden won the US National Figure Skating Championships. In 2019, he grabbed the Silver medal in the Nationals.

Additionally, he also won the Silver medal at the  Junior Grand Prix 2017. Camden started skating when he was 5 years old. Over the years he gave impressive performances and has grabbed his rightful place at the US World Championships Team.

 

 

The World Championships will kick off on 21st March 2022 and end on 27th March 2022. Nathan Chen who is the current World and Olympic champion was supposed to be the No. 1 contender at the Championships. However, the star figure skater pulled out due to an injury.

This made a place for Camden Pulkinen. Pulkkinen will have a pretty good chance at the medal now. Because the top skaters in the world, Yuzuru Hanyu and Nathan Chen have both opted out, this has now made the path clear for many new aspiring skaters like Camden.

Why did Chen pull out of the Championships?

Chen has decided to withdraw from the World Championships because of an injury he sustained during the Winter Olympics. Chen himself is disappointed but at the same time, doesn’t want to take any risks.

“I have been training for this competition since returning from Beijing. I have a nagging injury that I’ve been dealing with and I don’t want to risk further injury by practicing and competing next week,” revealed Nathan Chen.

The 3-time World Champion had a chance to win the Olympics and the World Championships in the same year, but however, it wasn’t meant to be.
