“A Great Initiative”- Magnus Carlsen Lauds Effort by Chess Tour to Raise Money for People of Ukraine

Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 has reached its second leg. While the first tournament, Airthings Masters was won by Magnus Carlsen quite comprehensively, other Grand Masters will look to catch up with the world chess champion in the second tournament. However, the second tournament will not feature any Russian Grand Masters due to the ban issued by International Chess Federation (FIDE).
The organizers renamed the second tournament of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour as Charity cup. Its major goal is to raise money for the people of Ukraine during these tough times.

Magnus Carlsen appreciates the noble initiative
Just before the commencement of the Charity Cup, world number one, Magnus Carlsen complements the entire chess fraternity on their noble initiative. He wrote an appreciation post on his Twitter handle on Saturday.

In the post, Carlsen said, “A great initiative from the chess world to help Ukraine! Personally I would have liked to see all the qualified participants invited to the tournament, as it would have given the Russians a chance to take a brave stance, and retained the sporting integrity of the tournament.”

In the first leg of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, the world chess championship history repeated itself once again. It was Magnus Carlsen vs Ian Nepomniachtchi all over again. While the first five matches were a draw, it was game sixth that rewarded Carlsen the Airthings Masters’ trophy. All the games in the finals were like déjà vu for both the players.
If Magnus Carlsen is taking part in a tournament, most of the time you already have a winner. No matter what the format is, he somehow always manages to emerge victorious.
