19-Year-Old American Grandmaster Files $100M Lawsuit Against Magnus Carlsen and Chess.com for ‘Ruining’ His Reputation: “Cannot Obtain Employment”

Since 2013, Magnus Carlsen has held the title of an undisputed global chess champion. While it may seem that all it takes to succeed at chess is mental aptitude, that may not be the case. Nevertheless, a strange chess cheating saga involving him and an American 19-year-old chess master, Hans Niemann, has entered the American legal system.

The story has captured the interest of the chess community and the public as the inquiry continues. Meanwhile, another update has come regarding the accusation against Hans.

Massive update on Magnus Carlsen and Hans Niemann’s fuss

Hans Niemann, a 19-year-old chess player, is at the center of charges of cheating that have shaken the chess community. Meanwhile, he took another step in the case while filing a lawsuit in the United States against Magnus. In addition, reportedly chess.com is also being sued by a Missouri district court for, among other offenses, conspiracy and defamation.

As per Niemann’s lawsuit document, he is requesting money for the damages of $100,000,000. A tweet made by Gotham Chess broke the news on the internet with the caption, “Hans Niemann has filed a lawsuit seeking $400,000,000+ in damages. Oh my god.” 

Previously, Niemann quoted his thoughts regarding Magnus, “Carlsen, having solidified his position as the “King of Chess,” believes that when it comes to chess, he can do whatever he wants and get away with it.” 

The lawsuit claimed that Niemann’s championship tickets had been rescinded due to Carlsen’s charges. Meanwhile, his upcoming match versus German prodigy Vincent Keymer, 17, has been postponed. Also, per the charges, a line was reportedly quoted: “cannot obtain employment as a chess teacher at a reputable school.”

The investigation does deterioration of Magnus and Hans’ life

Earlier, Niemann confronted that everything Carlsen blamed him for doing resulted from Sinquefield’s defeat. On the other hand, Carlsen stated that he reckoned Niemann of disloyalty before the game’s start. Previously, Hans asserts that Carlsen’s purported plot caused him to lose his finances and reputation due to the cheating allegations.

Along with this, he has also drawn considerable ridicule for his fanciful notion. For example, he did not acquire an invitation to the Tata Steel Chess Tournament and failed to secure work as a chess instructor at a recognized institution.
