Injury is a major possible threat in any sport, especially in those where it includes animals, like equestrian. In the arena of equestrians, the injuries are tenable for the equines as well as for the jockeys. And the injuries sustained from this sport are more fatal than the other sports. Many horses have died this year after enduring brutal injuries while performing on the tracks and one of the tracks has even been announced to shut down.

Besides the equine injuries, there were some jockeys who suffered horrible wounds. A jockey who won the Grade 1 race at Del Mar Oaks in August 2023, tripped down from his horse and injured himself. It was a horrible disaster that happened on the racetracks.

A 35-year-old jockey, Umberto Rispoli from Italy, took part in the Del Mar race and brutally injured himself after being thrown off the horse. According to News San Diego, he was riding a 3-year-old colt, Singlke Track Mind, and was unseated after 2 p.m. on 31st August.

A spokesperson of the equestrian racetrack said, the horse clipped heels with another racehorse and bumped on the track. It acquired great pressure which threw Rispoli off the turf. He was badly injured but luckily an ambulance and EMTs responded to the scene immediately and the equestrian was taken to hospital. However, this is not the first time Rispoli injured himself, there is one more incident of that year when the jockey was fractured.

Umberto Rispoli’s series of injuries

In March 2023, the equestrian tripped down from his horse and fractured his collarbone. His collarbones snapped like a stick and he was under the top surgeon Christopher Tong, according to the HK Racing Magzine. Before that tragedy, Rispoli had an ankle and knee injury a season prior to that. He fell down on the ground so hard that he bounced a meter into the air. He was then sent to Prince of Wales Hospital to have a better and quicker treatment. Despite having such injuries, his spirits did not fall down and he said, “If it is broken four parts, but it is broken well and that makes it easier to operate on and heal.”
