Horse racing world stunned after a majestic recovery

A 15-year-old BB met a life-threatening accident after getting wedged between a latch and a 12ft metal gate. She was trying to move out of their field with her equine friend at Hewshott, near Liphook. As soon as she ran backward to escape, the latch tore through her skin and muscles and gave her a large open wound. It was a horrific injury with her ribs and her chest cavity visible.

It was a very major injury, however, calling the Liphook Equine Hospital by the farrier was one of the best decisions. The mare was sedated by vet Ine, and her injury was carefully cleaned and stitched. She also applied a belly band to the wound for protection. The healing procedure was examined every few days. It was regularly cleaned, and the dressing was changed positively.

With this, the dead skin and muscle were removed whenever necessary and after debriding the wound, it was left open to let it heal on its own. To speed up the progress, the vet also opted for laser therapy which came out to be of great use. After staying in the box for three months, the wound has now healed, and the biggest credit goes to the Liphook Equine Hospital. With their help, the mare is now back in his paddock and can be ridden again. This was one of the most horrific cases for the vet herself, and she shared her feelings about this experience.

For the vet Ine, it was one of the worst wounds in the horse racing community she had ever witnessed. She stated that the wound was so big, that she could fit her hand inside it. She could feel her ribs and say that they weren’t damaged from the inside. She kept her eye constantly on the wound and did all the necessary things required to make it better. This is the reason why, this wound healed so fast.

Ine stated, “I’m really pleased with how the injury has healed and the scar is much smaller than I anticipated.” The mare’s owner Gemma Stacey was absolutely sure that her beloved equine would not be able to make it after she saw the injury. She expressed, “It was horrific. There was a huge open wound on BB’s side with pieces of skin hanging off it. Thinking back to how bad the injury was, it’s incredible what an amazing recovery she has made.”

Stacey was also grateful to her farrier who took the right decision at the right time of covering the wound straightaway stopping it from getting contaminated. It is integral for all horse owners to be careful about even the smallest things surrounding their equine to avoid any such terrible accidents.
