Budding equestrians reflect on their icks

US Equestrian interviewed many rising talents in the equestrian world to know what they dislike about the industry. They posted their responses via a Twitter post with the caption, “What’s your equestrian ick?” The first person to brave the question was teenager Ariana Marnell, who won the Grand Junior Hunter Championship with her horse Babylon. She said, “My equestrian ick is probably when people make mistakes and then blame the horses or their trainer. So that’s a big one”. Elise Stephens, who shined in the Horse Show on behalf of Rendezvous Farms, picked up the baton next and said, “When people don’t pet their horses coming out of the ring”. Many of the other jockeys took issue with these points as well, but others gave a stronger focus on the riders’ aesthetics.

Apart from a certain lack of positive affirmation for their animal partners, riders often do not put a lot of thought into how they dress. As representatives of the sport these youngsters love, they cannot brook such a disregard for the white uniform. Along those lines, Tessa Downey said that she dislikes “When people ride with untucked shirts”. Sofia Cady also affirmed that the riders often don’t choose a traditional hunter tack, which makes them look odd. Aidan Kennedy was in a funny mood and evoked laughter all around by naming cringeworthy “TikTok edits” as his “equestrian ick”. All things aside, the involvement of these young stars, especially Ariana Marnell, made the Pennsylvania National Horse Show a raging success.

However, in a glorious twist, they clinched the coveted Grand Junior Hunter Championship in Harrisburg. She was very happy with her horse’s performance and said, “My weekend was amazing from the start? In his first class, Babylon got a 94, which made me so happy. I was really excited that this week went so well. He’s now been grand at all four indoors. That’s awesome. I’m just really proud of him, and I’m happy that I rode well and could do that for him. I think he really deserves to win”.
