The historical racetrack of Saratoga witnessed an epic victory as an undefeated rookie racehorse maintained her winning streak. She brought her hard-working trainer his first Grade 1 victory, as she sped past her fast rivals. The $444,051 equine also seized a huge chance to enter the prestigious Breeders’ Cup with her Spinaway Stakes victory.

Equestrian trainer gets first G1 win in 8th year of career

John Alexander Ortiz is known for his continuous hard work and his steady climb in the equestrian world. Ortiz ranked number 30 in terms of earnings in the year 2022. In fact, his current earnings from equestrian sports stand at $15,067,009. Despite his financial success, he was yet to win a Grade 1 race. After spending eight years in the sport, his horses came first in 316 races. Despite the high win count, none of them were Grade 1 victories. Moreover, his horses came second 244 times, many of those, missed Grade 1 victories. However, things changed for the hard-working trainer on 3rd September 2023, when one of his undefeated racehorses stepped forward.

Brightwork is the proud daughter of Outwork. The two-year-old racehorse made her debut in the 2023 season and was unbeaten so far. The Grade 1 $300,000 Spinaway Stakes marked her fourth start and fourth victory. Brightwork faced tough competition from her opponent Ways and Means. The rookie racehorse trained by veteran legend Chad Brown was the favorite of the race. Ways and Means had everything it needed to keep Ortiz away from a Grade 1 victory. However, Brightwork ensured that her trainer finally got blessed with a G1 win. The spectacular victory hit Ortiz with a huge wave of emotions, as he teared up after his champion’s winning run.

Trainer left in tears after career milestone

John Ortiz was consumed by several emotions at once. He cried tears of joy and was proud of his magician racehorse. The equestrian said, “I thank my dad and thank God. My family has supported me. My uncles are here, my cousins are here.” Ortiz thanked several other people as well and gave credit to everyone who added weight and meaning to his career. Ortiz thanked his staff for making Brightwork into the bright filly she is. The fast and intelligent racehorse used the backstretch to her advantage, whereas her opponent, Ways and Means couldn’t.

Brightwork sped past her competition finished the seven furlongs race and registered 1:23.17 on the clock. The Grade 1 Saratoga win also earned Ortiz a $30,000 credit reward for the upcoming Breeders’ Cup. The Santa Anita racetrack will hold the $2 million Grade 1 event on 3rd November this year. Ortiz now has his sights set on his next big venture. The champion filly will look forward to registering another big victory for her trainer at Santa Anita.
