The equestrian community was plunged into dismay on June 15 as news spread regarding the Salt River wild horses. These animals hold a special place in the hearts of many, symbolizing Arizona’s rugged beauty and the untamed spirit of the American West. However, they are facing harsh conditions in Arizona, such as 1500 CFS raging rivers and scorching temperatures exceeding 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Tragically, one of the horses fell victim to a fatal attack by a group of bachelor stallions.

Recently, a Facebook post resurfaced from a user belonging to the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group, announcing the birth of four new foals named Iris, Wonder, and Strider. The post also sadly noted the demise of another foal, now named GoGo Gadget after the popular cartoon “Inspector Gadget,” which aired from the 1980s to 2023. The name is a tribute to both his maternal line and his father, Widget.

GoGo’s death was the result of an attack by a group of bachelor stallions, shedding light on the harsh realities these wild horses endure. He sustained bite wounds on his back, but he bravely kept pace with his band, sparking hope that he had been rescued just in time.

Tragically, a few days later, despite the tireless efforts of the equestrian team, his condition worsened, prompting them to seek urgent veterinary assistance. Sadly, en route to the veterinary clinic, the foal passed away, leaving the team devastated.

Stallions Widget and Simon, aided by dedicated volunteers, successfully reunited a young foal with his mother Cece, and grandmother Bebe after an initial separation. Managing wild horses humanely is challenging for the equestrian team but they still decided to cremate a deceased foal due to circumstances (as he died in the car) and affection. Acknowledging the cost of cremation, donations are requested to support ongoing efforts to safeguard and nurture the Salt River wild horses, with contributions welcome towards this cause. However, as soon as the news spread on Facebook, fans expressed their sorrow.
