The equestrian world has always prioritized the element of surprise. To most experts, the win percentage is arbitrary, and any horse can triumph on the day of the competition. While this is, to some extent, true, the history of horse racing has shown that skill and experience count more than luck alone. Even renowned trainer Brad Cox approved the importance of experience, saying, “I hear people say win percentage doesn’t matter. That’s almost like saying batting average doesn’t matter”. Now, another trainer with a connection to Cox has proved him right with an iconic victory.

This 34-year-old learned the ropes of horse training from Cox and stepped into a solo career no more than three years ago. Now, she is one of the most successful trainers in the mid-Atlantic circuit, with a winning rate of over 27%. With a view to improving her ratings even more and proving her mentor’s point, she made a huge splash at the Pimlico Race Course.

Brittany Russell entered the 2-year-old filly Low Society in the third start on Sunday, and the magnificent beast soared to victory. This was the trainer’s seventh victory in the meet, beating out Hugh McMahon by one win. McMahon won the Race 10 finals with the help of Dancinonthebeach, but he lost the title to Russell. Now, with five career titles under her belt, Brittany Russell has firmly established herself as one of the top trainers in the equestrian world. Speaking to Paulick Report, she expressed her happiness with the results, saying, “It’s awesome. I’ll be honest, I don’t feel like this was an easy meet for us”. Russell gave the credit for her victory to her trainees, who were spectacular throughout the meet.

Russell said, “We had some nice horses, some stakes win, good horses winning good races. That’s really what we’re here for”. Her trained filly, Low Society, gave an exhilarating performance and brought home the 1500th victory for rider Jevian Toledo. The Pennsylvania native brought her daughter Edy to Pimlico to witness the historic achievement. They cheered from the spectator’s box as Toledo received a sign from the Maryland Jockey Club to commemorate his win. The day got even more special when Low Society qualified for the $30,000 prize. The trainer loved the surprise and beaming with pride. With her past winnings, Brittany Russell is on her way to becoming the first woman in Maryland to claim the state’s winningest trainer title.
