The former Winter Olympics figure skating medalist, Kamila Valieva’s world, took a standstill on January 29 this year. On that day, the three members- the Court of Arbitration for Sport banned her for four years for violating anti-doping rules. Before that, the Russian athlete had to go through a detailed investigation from WADA to thoroughly judge her case. But albeit a clean chit from the Russian anti-doping agency’s ruling, the 17-year-old figure skater couldn’t evade her fate of bowing to the final judgment.

That aired multiple questions on the Russian authority’s move on the anti-doping stand in the sport. Recently, another scenario came out that firmly put a question mark on Russia’s attitude for the coming days. In the dearth of the Olympics, the situation gave a much deeper insight.

Russian authority takes a bold step ahead of the Olympics

In the latest update, SwimSwam’s X-handle disbursed the news of Russia’s lackadaisical attitude toward taking a firm step against the anti-doping fiasco. The post was captioned, “Russia Fails to pay $1.2 Million in Annual Contributions to WADA”. In further detailing, several discrepancies from the Russian side surfaced at the moment. The World Anti-Doping Agency is dependent on the member countries’ donations. However, the USA already shares a lion’s share of it. But being a prominent member, Russia also holds certain duties towards the sports’ watchdog.

But when Kamila Valieva’s anti-doping fiasco was already warming the situation, Russia’s absence in taking responsibility made a matter to look out closely. Moreover, the ongoing feud between the Council of Europe and the Russian ministry muddied the situation more than ever. On that line, WADA’s comment in September last year infuriated the Russian sports council. At that moment, the watchdog lambasted the council for “not being in line with the 2021 Code.” The Russian authority didn’t post its rebuttal at that moment. That deafening silence raised a serious question of the country’s attitude to eradicating the increasing doping infestation among its sports persons. Kamila Valieva’s case added another element to doubt Russia’s stand on that issue.

Russian anti-doping body’s ruling on Kamila Valieva

When Kamila Valieva faced the accusation of consuming a banned substance, her primary face-saving notion was that she didn’t know about the possible effects of trimetazidine. She stated at that moment that the substance was included in her grandfather’s medication. But when the situation popped up under the Russian Anti-doping Agency’s reins, they used Kamila Valieva’s minor age from that time to save her achievements. That invited a flak from WADA on the Russian authority’s mentality. Meanwhile, the watchdog threatened to “exercise its right of appeal” to the CAS. In the CAS, those logics withered away.

Now, a sizeable chunk of Russian athletes are going under suspension for breaking anti-doping rules. Nonetheless, the Russian athletes received their due contention in the Paris Olympics being neutral participants. But the present scenario wouldn’t help the national cause.
