WATCH: 17-Year-Old US Star Sets World Record at Junior Figure Skating Championships

Days after setting the world record for most points in the short program, Ilia Malinin is in the news again.

The favorite for the Gold Medal at the Junior Figure Skating Championship did not disappoint as he won with an overall world record score.

Ilia Malinin sets another world record in the Championship win

Prior to the event that took place at the Tondiraba Ice Hall, Tallinn, Malinin was considered the favorite to win. He made the perfect start to the same by scoring a record 88.99 points in the short program.

In the free skate round, the 17-year-old performed four perfect quad jumps. This landed him a score of 187.12 points, which beat the previous record of 177.86, which was set in 2019 by Japan’s Shun Sato. The total score of 276.11 is also a world record that surpassed the previous tally of 255.11 also set by Shun Sato.

Malinin prevailed over second-placed Mikhail Shaidorov by a margin of 41.8 points. By doing so, he also broke the record for the largest junior men’s margin of victory. He surpassed the previous record of 17.12 points set by fellow American Adam Rippon.

This was not enough for Ilia as he also broke the record for the margin of victory in any discipline at the junior world championship, which was set by Yun Kim (24.19) in the year 2006.

The championship win means Malinin has become the third American in the last 6 years to win the title. He is also just the 5th American to ever win the title after Adam Rippon (2009), Josh Farris (2013), Vincent Zhou (2017), and Tomoki Hiwatashi (2019).

Second-placed Mikhail was placed Eighth after the short program, but after a tremendous display in the free skate round, he finished second. Japan’s Tatsuya Tsuboi finished third.

The US could enjoy even more success at the World Championships

At the end of Day 1 of the women’s events, Isabeau Levito of the US emerged as the leader. With a score of 72.50 in the short event, Levito ended the day on a high.

The top 5 positions were all captured by American and South Korean figure skaters. Shin Ji-a and Yun Ah-sun of South Korea secured second and third places with 69.38 and 66.28 points, respectively.

USA’s Lindsey Thorngren placed fourth with 66.14 points, followed by another South Korean, Wi Seo-Yeong, who has 66.09 points.

Russian and Belarusian athletes have been barred from the competition due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
