Video: Amidst Stars on Ice Nathan Chen Takes a Break for Olivia Rodrigo’s Concert

Winning gold at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Nathan Chen is a decorated figure skater with several titles to his name. An Olympic gold medalist, a three-time World Champion, and a six-time reigning US Champion, Chen, is spending a well-earned downtime during the off-season. According to his latest Instagram story, Chen attended a concert by the famous singer-songwriter, Olivia Rodrigo. The fans certainly had a field day with this information.

Nathan’s run at the Olympics

Nathan Chen became the first United States skater to win gold in the men’s field since Evan Lysacek in 2010. Scoring a combined total of 332.60, Chen placed first with a considerable margin of 12.55 from the silver medalist. On the other hand, Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama (310.05) and Shoma Uno (293.00) gained a 2-3 finish for Japan.

Nathan had been a favorite for the title, even back in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. However, still green on the global stage, he flubbed three major jumping passes in the short program, unable to take the pressure and falling to 17th position. In a turn of events, in the free program at Pyeongchang, Chen wrote history by packing 6 quads in his program and rising to 5th in combined scores, earning the highest scores in the free skate.

By Beijing, Chen was a seasoned skater and performed two almost-clean skates, even setting a record for the short program score at 113.97 points.

What’s next for Nathan Chen

Nathan Chen is currently enrolled at Yale University. He took two years off from academics in order to train for the Olympics. After winning his gold, Chen plans to return to Yale for his studies, and for now, does not plan to train while he is there. He has two years left at Yale to get his degree in statistics and data science.

As is a staple in the off-season, most skaters perform in ice shows around the world. Nathan will be joining the ‘Stars On Ice’ tour for a few months with most of the U.S. Olympic team.
