The last couple of days have been very challenging for the Japanese figure skater. Yuzuru Hanyu. At the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022, he couldn’t win his third consecutive Olympic gold and even failed at his lifelong dream of landing a perfect quad axel. While the setbacks of the Winter Olympics were still fresh in everyone’s minds, now came another shocking news of his withdrawal from the World Championship.

France is hosting the ISU World Figure Skating Championship this month from March 21st to March 27th. However, the figure skating legend, Yuzuru Hanyu, has withdrawn his name from the championship because of his ankle injury, which he has not been able to recover from since the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022.

Who will replace Yuzuru Hanyu?

The Japan Skating Federation released the statement today, saying, “(Hanyu’s) sprain of the right ankle joint injured at the Beijing Olympics has not been completely healed.” In regards to the world championship participation, the Federation further added, “Miura Kao would replace Hanyu in Montpellier.”

When Yuzuru Hanyu was asked about his future goals after the Winter Olympics, he said, “I’ve been told to rest (the ankle). First I will rest and then take it from there.” Although he has given no solid answer about his future endeavors, for now, all he needs is plenty of rest and recovery time.

Who is Miura Kao?

Born in the year 2005, Miura Kao is Japan’s Junior National Champion of 2021-22 and he has also won the bronze medal in the 2022 Four Continents event. The 16-year-old will have a lot to prove, given that he is replacing the figure skating legend Yuzuru Hanyu.

Since the two-time Olympic champion, Hanyu, is missing the World Championship in France, he’ll probably appear in the Grand Prix season happening this year in October. While in the long term, there is always a possibility of him performing at Milano Cortina in 2026 Winter Games.

For now, all one can wish for is his swift recovery so that the fans can see him once again on the ice rink where he belongs.
