Since the Tokyo Olympics, Sunisa Lee has held the reigning all-around title representing America at the crucial hour. Lee is a member of the Hmong community, which arrived in the US after the Vietnam War and was the first to advance to the Games. The following year she joined Auburn and continued her alloy win streak going at the NCAA Championships. But this year, she was given a dire health warning and everything changed for the young athlete.

Lee famously obtained a partnership with CLIF last year. The contract allowed her to work together with the charity Voice in Sport Foundation to take part in Title IX training on college campuses across the United States. Earlier this year, the Olympian inked brand partnership worth $7.62 billions followed by Fairway Auto Brokers’s deal in July. Lee has partnered with a total of eleven brands since her rise to stardom two years ago.

Before the national competition, Lee admitted that she sometimes woke up feeling swelled and unable to grip properly due to her kidney problems. When asked how it was like to still practice on those days, she replied, “It’s really hard to push through.” Despite these challenges, Lee competed and was well-prepared for the American events.

Despite all odds, Suni got the second-highest score at the continental qualifiers on beam with 14.5 and a 13.5 on vault. The gymanast was in attendance for three days in the nationals and opted to participate in only two routines. Failing to match her teammates, who performed on four exercises, the gymnast was left at the bottom of the standing. However, more than everything else, she felt emotional and immensely proud of herself.

Later, the gymnast chose to stay off the international competition underway at Antwerp despite having an invite. While her focus is still on the Summer Olympics, there are very few events that may guarantee Lee a berth for the following year. With the saddened anticipation to match Biles’ mark, will Lee make a strong comeback in the next season?
