For any collegiate gymnast, representing their school on national levels is among the highest of honors that keeps them grounded. However, sometimes, things can take an ugly turn that isn’t previously taken into account. For Brockport University athletes, the recently held NCGA Championships promised a great opportunity to end their season on a high note. But it wasn’t to be for one of their most senior stars.

For any gymnast who’s been around the scene for a long time, being injured is part and parcel of the job. However, being bogged down by adversities days before a crucial game isn’t something anyone looks forward to. And yet, for Rachel Swick, that’s exactly what broke her heart.

Gymnastics star faces unprecedented ordeal

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter) by user Sunisezhova, Swick’s misfortune has been shared with the country’s gymnastics connoisseurs. “That is actually so awful“, reads the emotional caption of the post accompanied by two sobbing emojis. The image shared along with the post shows Rachel grimacing as she sits in a wheelchair. She can also be observed to sport medical appendages on both legs.

22 YEARS OF GYMNASTICS JUST TO TEAR BOTH ACHILLES THE DAY BEFORE MY LAST COMPETITION EVER“, reads Swick’s original TikTok post caption. It is all the more heartbreaking for her since the Brockport Eagles went into the NCGA finals as the winners of the Eastern Regionals. However, the Eagles’ 16-1 overall record this season didn’t hold on to its momentum as the team finished the NCGA Championships in fourth place.

Earlier in March, Swick contributed significantly to the Eagles’ win at the Ben Light Gymnasium in Ithaca with a 9.875 score on the bars. While her frustration is justified, she certainly isn’t the first gymnast to face steep hurdles on her way to glory.

Stars fight their way back, despite dark clouds overhead

For Auburn’s celebrity star Suni Lee, the battle with her kidney injury has been a difficult one. So much so that she had to sit out most of the last season as she recovered from her setback. And now, despite missing out on the 2024 Winter Cup and the National Training Camp, Lee’s fans believe she will inevitably make a return for the upcoming Paris Olympics. On the other hand, NCAA gymnast Kendall Laplante also had to take an undesired break last year after breaking her Achilles, but only last month, she took to social media to announce that her comeback is imminent.

For English artistic gymnast and Olympic medalist Alice Kinsella, a dislocated elbow wasn’t on the tables when he headed into the British Championships. However, the stars didn’t align for the 23-year-old, and an early exit couldn’t be avoided. With so many comeback journeys to look up to, only time will tell if young Rachel also has what it takes in her to overcome the difficulties.
