Why Simone Biles didn?t compete in the event

Biles pulled out of multiple events at the Olympics. She withdrew from the team final and every individual event bar the balance beam, where she won bronze. She reasoned she had been experiencing the ?twisties?, a phenomenon that causes gymnasts to lose spatial awareness when in the air.

Biles? move to withdraw led to major backlash, but it also furthered the talk around mental health issues in sports. The gymnastics legend was inspired by Naomi Osaka, who had withdrawn from the French Open and Wimbledon Championships earlier in the year for similar reasons.

Now, big-name athletes like Biles, Naomi Osaka, Michael Phelps, Serena Williams, etc are speaking up about their experiences. The conversation regarding the stigma that surrounds mental health issues among athletes is taking center stage. Even outside the arena, Biles is an inspiration for many.
