After Alexander Ovechkin completed 800 goals, expectations are high that Ovechkin will soon surpass Wayne Gretzky’s record. ‘The Great One had made 894 goals in his hockey career. Recently, in a frank conversation, Wayne Gretzky finally revealed his honest perspective about Ovechkin breaking his record. He also made an interesting observation about the way Ovechkin played hockey. 

Along with this, ‘The Great One’ described the impact Ovechkin’s record-breaking would have on the sport. Later, he shared a unique perspective about how Ovechkin was similar to notable players during his time. 

Wayne Gretzky’s frank admissions on Alexander Ovechkin 

“I think we’re past the point of if he’s going to do it,”  Gretzky stated. Continuing, he spoke that when Ovechkin breaks his record, it would be “great for the game.”  It seems that Gretzky is referring to how hockey’s popularity would also increase after Ovechkin makes his own record. 

Later Gretzky also praised Ovechkin. “I think that it couldn’t happen to a better person” he expressed. Gretzky also highlighted a similarity between Ovechkin and other high scorers during his time like Mike Bossy and Brett Hull. “If you watch closely with Alex and Brett and Mike Bossy, they don’t miss the net and they knew to find that open area” Gretzky spoke. Needless to say, has a high opinion of Ovechkin’s prowess.

The interesting anecdote of Wayne Gretzky’s special gift for Alexander Ovechkin

Ovechkin once told Gretzky that for his collection, he wanted a stick used by Gretzky himself. ‘The Great One’ then replied that he would fulfill Gretzky’s wish only if he won the Stanley Cup. 

In the year 2018, Ovechkin and his team Washington Capitals emerged victorious, winning the Stanley Cup. After winning, Ovechkin demanded the stick promised to him and Gretzky finally gave him his game stick which he had used to win his 807th goal. The Great One also added the words, “love watching you play”  On receiving this amazing gift with Gretzky’s heartwarming words, Ovechkin’s joy knew no bounds.
