Wayne Gretzky shares a special bond with his father Walter Gretzky, who coached him from an early age. Talking about his father’s reaction, Wayne Gretzky spoke in detail about the incident behind the odd remark in the year 1999. Wayne stated that he was playing his first All-Star game in 1980.

Wayne Gretzky discloses untold details about the All-Star match and his father’s reaction 

The Great One’ revealed, “My first NHL All-Star game was Gordie Howe’s last, 1980 in Detroit.” Gretzky had played against Gordie Howe in this game, which made it more memorable for him.

Later, he narrated how he played against some of the best hockey players like Gilbert Perreault and Mike Murphy and Tiger Williams were his linemates. At that time, Gretzky was just 19 years old and this was a great experience for him.

Wayne received a puck after the game from his father. When Gretzky asked him the reason behind this action, his father gave him a befitting reply, “I thought you would want to touch it, you didn’t the whole game.” Needless to say, Gretzky was unable to score many goals during his first All-Star match.

Further, Gretzky related how the All-Star game was a great opportunity for interaction with other hockey players. “It’s a chance to sit on the bench and talk to guys on the other team, get pictures and autographs,” The Great One spoke. Later, Gretzky improved and in 1983 All-Star game he scored four goals. He then continued to play in All-Star games for 18 years before finally retiring in 1999. However, his last All-Star game before retirement was special and had a surprising outcome.

‘The Great One’ played his final All-Star match on 24th January 1999. Before the game, Gretzky’s wife made a surprising statement, “Well if it’s your last game, try to win a car.” While Wayne burst out laughing at this comment, fate made the unbelievable take place.

Trying his best in the game, Gretzky and his team won the All-star game. After the match, Gretzky won the Most Valued Player title, and along with it, a car as a prize. Needless to say, Gretzky’s wife’s wish surprisingly came true.
