Frankie Dettori is a marvel. He recently turned 53 years young and got back on the saddle post announcing his retirement. That was less of a surprise, in all honesty. Dettori felt he had a lot more left to do and frontiers to chart in his chosen vocation. As a result, he will now move to the United States for the foreseeable future, to broaden his horizons and seek greener pastures as well.

Frankie Dettori wants to conquer his final peak. The Melbourne Cup remains the only accolade missing from his bursting at the seams trophy cabinet. He hoped to take another shot at charting a summit for that peak this year, but a ban due to a breach in whip rules played spoilsport. For the moment, he stands shortlisted for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, a high honour, among other star wattage backed contenders.

A distinguished jockey, Sir Anthony Peter McCoy OBE, cast his vote for the award. Were it up to him, the winner of the award would be none other than Frankie Dettori. Sir Anthony made his choice known via a post on X that featured a 14-second clip of the Italian jockey. Dettori replied to that on the same platform with a pair of hearts.

Frankie Dettori had other ventures in the pipeline besides juxtaposing his racing career. Dettori was one of the participants in the reality TV show, I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! He was the first celebrity voted off the show in Season 23. That was filmed in New South Wales, Australia. He was one among six sportspersons shortlisted for the award.

Frankie Dettori is not the only distinguished sportsperson nominated for the award. The others include Lionesses’ goalkeeper Mary Earps and golfer Rory McIlroy. Also on that list are heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson, wheelchair tennis player Alfie Hewett, and former cricketer Stuart Broad.

It remains to be seen if Frankie Dettori will add this to his burgeoning and ever growing list of accolades. The awards show is set for Tuesday, the 19th of December. Easily the oldest on that list of nominees, Dettori does not appear to be in a hurry to slow down. After the adrenaline rushes accompanying horse racing, it is unlikely he will settle for a less exciting life as he ages. The question on every tongue will be: how long can he continue to evade the embrace of Father Time?
