“He Bossed Them”: Retired Champion Jockey Opens up on Ballyburn After Major G1 Stint

The 2024 Dublin Racing Festival was just delightful. Many horses raced magnificently at the Leopardstown Racecourse, thrilling the spectators who had come to see the sport. But the majority of the horses that drew the attention of horse racing fans by winning big G1 events were those that Willie Mullins had trained. A horse named Ballyburn became victorious in the Grade 1 Tattersalls Ireland 50th Derby Sale Novice Hurdle with all the requisite expectations.
Ballyburn astonished everyone in the G1 event when he won by a massive seven lengths. Retired jockey Davy Russell, a three-time Irish jump racing champion, gave this horse the recognition it deserved after the Dublin Racing Festival. Since he was astounded by the horse’s accomplishment, Russell only lavished praise on the star equine.

Willie Mullins accomplished an incredible achievement during this year’s Dublin Racing Festival. As the trainer, on a single day at Leopardstown Racecourse, achieved eight G1 race wins thanks to his incredible horses. With Ballyburn, the trainer was able to clinch the title of the Grade 1 Tattersalls Ireland 50th Derby Sale Novice Hurdle. X post by Road To Cheltenham states that former champion jockey Davy Russell “wasn’t a believer” before the big event, but his perspective completely changed after the G1 stint by Ballyburn. The retired jockey complimented the horse, saying, “Jeez, that was some performance and he bossed them something rotten from the front.”

The fact that Russell backed Slade Steel, who had been coached by Henry De Bromhead, was also mentioned. Nevertheless, Ballyburn’s final-stretch performance in the G1 race astonished the former jockey, as he defeated his favorite. Thanks to his extensive knowledge, Russell is aware that Mullins will be preparing his horse for the Cheltenham Festival, another event that many fans are looking forward to. “He’ll take the world of beating wherever he shows up in Cheltenham,” the jockey remarked. Since Ballyburn was absolutely outstanding in his season opener, everyone is holding him in high esteem.

A magnificent hurdle race
Leopardstown Racecourse was bustling with activity on a sunny day for horse racing. People were excited for the upcoming G1 races at the bustling Dublin Racing Festival. Ten horses contested the Grade 1 Tattersalls Ireland 50th Derby Sale Novice Hurdle. As the race started, Ballyburn made a strong move towards the leading horse in the 2m race that included seven hurdles.

Ballyburn seized the lead with two hurdles to go, but Slade Steel wasn’t about to back down. But the Mullins-trained horse was too fast for Slade Steel in the raw speed-clash after the last hurdle. Ballyburn surged forward at a dizzying rate, eventually crossing the finish line seven lengths clear of second place. At the 2024 Dublin Racing Festival, Mullins had a fantastic day, as this race added to his impressive feat of eight G1 race victories in a single day.
