Racehorse Trainer Provides Latest Update on Horses That Miraculously Survived Fatal Kentucky Mishap

In every sport, the impact of losing colleagues is heartbreaking. In horse racing, the effects can be even greater, considering how the beloved bovine friends can tip the scales by their mere presence. As the world reels from news of three racehorses meeting their untimely demise in Kentucky, the equine community looks to come together to stand by each others’ side as they find their way through the traumatic incident.
Injuries in the horse racing community aren’t an alien thing by any means. However, having to say goodbye to our equine pals due to a freak accident can never be easy, as trainer Eddie Kenneally can attest.

In a recent post on X, Kenneally took a moment to extend his thanks after the horrific trailer crash. “On behalf of my family and my team I want to extend my sincere gratitude for all of the texts, calls, thoughts and prayers.“, wrote the racehorse trainer after losing three of his beloved equine apprentices overnight. He also wished that the experience is something that no one should have to go through.

In a subsequent post, the trainer also mentioned that caring for the racehorses is not easy making such losses all the more impactful. “So much hard work and thoughtfulness goes into taking care of these horses and the loss is tragic.“, said Kenneally.

Heartwrenching details emerge
While transporting horses from Oaklawn Park to Keeneland, the trailer met with a crash on the Bluegrass Parkway in Nelson County after colliding with an embankment. The accident hospitalized the driver and killed three horses from Eddie’s barn. According to a social media post by the Bardstown Fire Department, “The trailer, carrying Thoroughbreds, became dislodged from the king pin and ripped the cab of the truck from the frame“. “A lot of tough calls to make today.“, noted Kenneally after he received news of the accident.

“Losing three of them is an unbelievable tragedy. But because of everyone’s hard work there are four at an equine hospital and hopefully on their way to recovery.“, said Kelly Wheeler who came forward revealing that the three deceased horses were under her care in Kenneally’s barn. Among the three horses who died last night, Mizzen Mast and Darkroom have several accolades over their careers.
