The 80th running of the $200,000 Lecomte at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots unfolded as a thrilling battle between the top contenders, Track Phantom and Nash. The gloves were off from the start. Track Phantom, backed by L and N Racing, Clark Brewster, Jerry Caroom and Breeze Easy, displayed its prowess with a dominant 2 3/4 length victory over Nash. However, this triumph contributed a pivotal 20 points to Track Phantom’s quest for the Kentucky Derby.

It elevated his total to an impressive 30 points. Beyond the race dynamics, the magnitude of this victory for Track Phantom and his connections was truly remarkable. Notably, how Track Phantom outperformed his opponent deserves commendation.

Recently, the Kentucky Derby shared a post on X, highlighting Track Phantom’s remarkable performance on the track. Right from the start, Track Phantom showcased extraordinary speed, capitalizing on his advantageous outside draw to outpace Nash and secure an early lead. Jockey Joel Rosario skillfully guided the colt. They initiated a swift 24.01 opening call and maintained control with a disciplined 48.36 half-mile clocking.

However, as Nash endeavored to challenge around the far turn, Track Phantom effortlessly repelled any threats, entering the stretch with a commanding lead. The champion offspring of Gun Runner then surged ahead, leaving Nash to mount a determined effort for a second-place finish. Trainer Steve Asmussen, visibly pleased with the performance, commended Track Phantom’s combination of speed and rhythm. Furthermore, he highlighted the horse’s potential for further improvement.

With a final time of 1:44.73, Track Phantom’s triumph solidified his position on the Derby trail, marking an impressive milestone in the horse’s racing career.

Asmussen’s dominance in Lecomte

For trainer Steve Asmussen, this marked his fourth Lecomte victory, showcasing his prowess in developing talented contenders. Nevertheless, Asmussen expressed gratitude for the ownership group behind Track Phantom and commended the horse’s performance throughout the 3-year-old series at Fair Grounds. Additionally, he expressed excitement about the position they find themselves in. With Track Phantom’s undefeated record in two-turn races and earnings totalling $285,000, the team is poised for a promising  Kentucky Derby campaign.

With the Lecomte in the rearview mirror, the Road to the Kentucky Derby now focuses on the upcoming challenges at Fair Grounds. The Risen Star, presented by Lamarque Ford-Lincoln (G2), on Feb. 17 awaits the Derby dreamers. It features a demanding 1 1/8-mile distance. It’s contested at 1 3/16 miles. However,  Track Phantom and other contenders continue their quest for Derby glory. The excitement and anticipation in the racing world intensify.
