A 35-year-long career to take pride in, but the journey to the zenith has not been easy. Frankie Dettori, at 53, still rules the flat racing realm as the most decorated Italian jockey, having made imprints on British soil. But earlier in 2023, his retirement announcement hinted at his shift to the US circuit. Fresh off his ‘I’m a celebrity’ appearance, Dettori now rides victors after victors at the Santa Anita Park. But his career isn’t free from unanticipated injuries.

Mishaps don’t necessarily take place on the race tracks. In the same vein, in an off-track incident, the 53-year-old champion jockey fell at the chasm of a life-threatening situation. Shedding light on it, Dettori opened up to English broadcaster Piers Morgan in an interview.

In a YouTube interview titled Frankie Dettori Interview | Piers Morgan Uncensored, the 53-year-old narrated his near-death experience story. Piers Morgan Uncensored’s X post highlighted Dettori’s quote I knew that I needed to get out – but I could not move”. “The plane went down” and Dettori’s expression instantly changed as he walked down the lane to take a glimpse of the terror. Continued saying, “I didn’t have time to scream, and I was just disappointed that I was going to die”. Since he was just a 29-year-old lad back then, the question “Why are you taking me to now?” directed at the almighty was justified since he had a lot to live for.

While he waited for “some miracle” to come to the rescue, the 3x British flat racing Champion Jockey had also felt like he was whirling inside a washing machine. From his expressions throughout, it was evident that he was mortified by the incident that almost took his life years back. But while a section of Dettori’s fanbase got teary-eyed at the narration, the others didn’t really buy his tale of woe.

One take at a time

With a passion for sports and an active lifestyle, I delved into the world of journalism and here I am creating insights on various avenues of the sporting realm. In my school years, I could often be found loitering about with a throw ball in hand or maybe engaging in a tough bout. My active participation in both traditional sports and hiking escapades has considerably shaped my mind and its thoughts.
