When NHL legend, Wayne Gretzky played his last game of ice hockey, there was not a single dry eye in the stadium. In 1999, Gretzky retired with a Hall of Fame induction. However, his legacy has only continued to crystalize on the ice. Such is the fandom of this icon, that a few days back, Gretzky’s jersey was presented for auction, and sold for a record breaking amount of money.

However, the jersey is precious because that belongs to a very special moment in Gretzky’s career. It was the irreplaceable jersey worn by Wayne Gretzky during his last NHL point. His last goodbye to the ice hockey fans was recorded in that jersey, which justifies the high amount of sales.

The memorable game jersey was stored at Madison Square Garden, where Gretzky scored his 2,857th and his very last score. The jersey was valuable not only for the ice hockey fans but also for Gretzky. “I’m not going to pull it on ever again. It’s hard. It’s hard to take it off right now. I have to be honest with you. I don’t want to take it off,” said Gretzky describing his attachment to the jersey. The jersey was later autographed for sale, which sold out at $715,120, reports ESPN.

Wayne Gretzky’s jersey superstition

Gretzky started playing hockey at a very young age, and the jersey was sometimes too loose on him. His father told him that he looked small in such a big size jersey, so Gretzky adopted a habit of tucking a side of his jersey to avoid looking skinny and small. However, this candid habit was later questioned as his luck for tucking up the right side of his jersey.
