Kiptum’s performance was particularly remarkable because he closed the second half of the race in an astonishing 59:45. The three entrants in the Chicago Marathon—Galen Rupp (2:06:07), Leonard Korir (2:07:56), and Conner Mantz (2:08:16)—have personal bests close to the Olympic standard of 2:08:10.

There have been only 11 instances of three American male runners achieving sub-2:08 marathon times in a single race.
