Fans revered martial art legend, Bruce Lee, for his on-screen fighting skills. However, since Lee didn’t participate in martial arts tournaments, many people doubted the master. While most people’s jaws dropped when Lee landed flying kicks and did pushups on two fingers, Lee’s on-inch punch has perhaps become his most legendary feat.

Even though Lee performed the one-inch punch in front of a live audience, some doubted the Jeet Kun Do founder. Among these doubters was a 230-pound man. He found out the result of unceremoniously challenging the martial arts master.

When a doubter asked Bruce Lee for a demo

In Matthew Polly’s book Bruce Lee: A Life, the author described an incident after Bruce showed the world the power of his one-inch punch. Lee regularly taught martial arts. Once a man who weighed 230 pounds showed up on Lee’s doorstep during class. The man?“had heard rumors of Bruce?s one-inch punch”?so he unceremoniously asked the Wing Chun master to demonstrate it.

“I don?t see how you can get any power from that distance.”?the 230-pound man told Bruce. However, instead of getting angry at the uninvited man, Bruce obliged.?“I?ll be happy to show you,” said Lee, smiling.?“The next instant, the man was flying eight feet through the air with a look of frozen terror on his face,”?writes Polly in his book.

Polly also wrote the man hit a wall and slumped down to the floor after Bruce showed the man the power of his punch. According to the author, when the man recovered, he could only utter the words,?“I see, I see.”?One of Lee’s students, Jesse, told Polly how Bruce kept improving his one-inch punch with regular practice, even while teaching his students.

The original one-inch punch

In 1964, Bruce Lee performed the one-inch punch in front of a live audience at the Long Beach International Karate Championships. Lee said he had learned the technique while training in Wing Chun under grandmaster Ip Man. However, over time, the JKD founder improved and tweaked the skill further.
