After the publication of his autobiography ‘Never Grow Up’ in 2015, several intimate details about Jackie Chan’s life came to the forefront. The legendary martial artist-turned-action movie star, along with co-writer Zhu Mo, opened up about personal details from his life in multiple chapters. One such chapter narrated his evolving relationship with his son, their differences in beliefs and values, and getting a terrible scare for his son’s life once. Jackie Chan was once worried about his son moving to a major Chinese city after several people had warned him about it.

In chapter 25, titled “FATHERHOOD PART II”, Chan wrote about his son ‘Jaycee Chan’, a singer in Hong Kong. He wrote about how his son grew up with luxury and seldom knew the value of earning something like his father, i.e. Jackie Chan did. Eventually, he took an interest in music as a teenager and shifted to another city. This is when Chan provided his son with all the security he could.

The strict regime in China back then could have been threatening to Jaycee’s life, feared Jackie Chan

Chan wrote in the book, “Jaycee started to write songs when he was a young teenager, so when he was fifteen, I sent him to Shanghai to study music with Jonathan Lee, a famous Taiwanese musician, and producer”. Jonathan Lee is one of the most respected and revered figures in the world of Mandopop music. Chan continued, “This was before the Hong Kong handover, and we didn?t know much about mainland China. Many people warned me, ‘Tell Jaycee to be careful. He?s new to the country'”. This was before July 1st, 1997 (Hong Kong handover date).

Chan further wrote, “I hired a few bodyguards to follow him around to make sure he didn?t get kidnapped. The bodyguards took their duties very seriously and wouldn?t let him go anywhere”. Jaycee Chan’s freedom was curtailed to a large extent. But such were the times in mainland China for Hongkongers before their handover. It was necessary to be cautious. Jackie Chan, who was already a huge movie star, still managed to fetch time to care for his child.

Other previously unknown details from Chan’s life were detailed in the book. From getting a hoax call from a fan about planting a bomb at one of his concerts in Vegas to one of his early crushes, Chan bared it all.

Jackie Chan’s past romance before embracing fatherhood with Jaycee

In 1979, when Jackie Chan was attending a concert by Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng, he felt strange romantic thoughts about her amidst a roar of applause. Chan never actually took it much further after he realized the potential problems it could create. A few years later, he was married to his now-wife Joan Lin. She gave birth to their son Jaycee Chan the same year.

Chan started the chapter (Fatherhood Part II) with an instance of his son calling to wish him ‘Happy Father’s Day’. All he could wish was that he called more often.
