“Keep His Hands Hard”: Chuck Norris Had an ‘Adventurous’ Experience Driving With Bruce Lee Once

Both Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris were legendary martial art prodigies. The Jeet Kune Do expert and the karate champion bonded well from the initial meet in 1968. In fact, Chuck and Lee trained together for two years in Norris’s backyard. 

In Lee’s 2018 biography, Bruce Lee: A Life By Mathew Polly, the 82-year-old revealed an adventurous anecdote that he experienced with the Sensei while driving. He talked about Lee’s weird affinity towards the makiwara board. It is a traditional Okinawan padded striking post made of rice straw bound with the rope used by karate practitioners to practice strikes.

Actor and martial artist Chuck Norris first met Lee at a karate competition. Both of them were impressed with each other’s skills in their respective styles. Their passion for martial arts became the main reason for their bonding. Since then, Norris grew fond of spending time with Lee. Moreover, he also remembered Lee’s weird antics that he shared in the legend’s biography.

Chuck shared that “Driving with Bruce was always an adventure.” Norris recalled that while driving Lee would keep a makiwara board on his lap or on the seat next to him. Furthermore, he stated;

“Every time we were caught in traffic or came to a stoplight he would beat on the board with either his fist or his knuckles to keep his hands hard.”

Attesting to Norris’s statement, many people have noticed Lee’s affinity for makiwara boards. 

Often his students have also revealed that Lee would train even on his relaxing days. Mentioning the makiwara boards, he would carry them while driving. This indicates that Bruce Lee was addicted to training. He did not like to sit idle. Instead, he believed in converting every other activity into martial arts.

Well, not just with makiwara boards, Chuck Norris also observed Lee’s other lesser-known training secrets.

Apart from working in films together, Norris learned about Bruce’s expertise in various workouts. The duo would train for hours together. Moreover, while training with Lee, Chuck realized why he was a global star. Last year, Bruce’s memoir Instagram page shared a video of the veteran actor recalling his days training with Lee.

They would perform lots of exercises, push-ups, sit-ups, kicks, and punches. Moreover, Norris noticed that for Lee, training, and conditioning were his life. He stated that “Bruce was a very rare type of individual”. In fact, he would perform curling dumbells while watching TV, or do a balancing act while putting on his pants.
