The Carlos Correa transfer has been dominating the transfer talks ever since the lockout began. With several teams across the league expressing interest in acquiring a player like Correa, he seems to be in for a windfall contract. Correa, too, has acted quickly, hiring super agent Scott Boras to negotiate his contract when the lockout lifts.

Carlos Correa was being pursued by a litany of teams. The Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers as well as his incumbent team, the Houston Astros, have all expressed an interest in securing his services come 2022. However, it seems as though one of those contenders may have a weakened claim after the hire of Boras.

The super-agent is famous for securing his clients some mega contracts. However, he has also in the past expressed displeasure at dealing with the Cubs.

Scott Boras and his history with the Chicago Cubs

Scott Boras is baseball’s super agent. With several clients spread across the league with $100 million-plus contracts, the agent will hold considerable sway over Carlos Correa and his decision. And that may not be great news for Cubs fans.

The possible fallout between the two dates back to when the Cubs were dealing with Boras’ client, Kris Bryant. The former National League MVP was in negotiations with the Cubs in 2020. However, Boras accused the team of manipulating the MLB Service Time Rules to their advantage then. He even went as far as to lodge a grievance against them.

Even though the Cubs eventually won the grievance, Boras still was dissatisfied with the team. Specifically calling out the Cubs in a memo, Boras expressed keen dissatisfaction with them. Speaking about the renovations as Wrigley Field and how the owners have been able to write off the profits by sinking capital into paying off the loan.

“However, the end result is that the Ricketts will own improved assets that significantly increases the value of the Cubs — value that is not shared with the players,” said Boras. Indicating that the player’s were unable to reap benefits of their services and that the profits were unfairly kept by the owners instead.

Clearly, there is no love lost between the two. And Correa’s representation of being unhappy with Cubs’ ownerships certainly doesn’t bode well for fans in the Windy City.

Cubs fans had held back no stops to get Correa playing out of Wrigley Field in 2022. Going as far as replacing words in a Christmas carol and even asking their latest acquisition in Marcus Stroman to negotiate on behalf of the team, considering the terms of the lockout.

However, it seems as though the Cubs will have to wait. Reportedly, the only hold-up between the two parties was the period of the contract initially. With the Cubs looking for a 7-year deal while Correa was hesitant to sign on for less than 10 years. However, this new angle may throw a spanner into the works.

And while Correa remains a free agent with the lockout still operating, Cubs fans will be hoping to mend some bridges before the negotiations begin.
