Star shortstop Javier Baez has started the season on fire for the Detroit Tigers, but his glory run still has a few miles to go. After turning impact player for the Detroit Tigers throughout Opening Week, Baez may have to spend some time on the injured list before he gets going again.

Baez was added to the 10-day injured list on Saturday afternoon with right thumb soreness. The move, however, was backdated to April 13th to make some changes to the roster accordingly.

The star shortstop signed on with the Tigers on a 6-year $140 million contract last November and has been a mainstay on their roster this season. Scoring 2 crucial go-ahead hits in his first few outings this season, Baez is showcasing his true quality.

Moreover, the player is also in tremendous form as he grows into the Tigers lineup. The 29-year-old is in some fine hitting form and they will be eagerly awaiting his return, whenever he decides to come back into the fold.

Baez placed on the Injury List

Ironically, Baez’s good form may well have been the cause of his injury. Celebrating his walk-off single for the win on Opening Day against the White Sox, Baez might have injured his thumb. He, however, might have aggravated the injury in the subsequent days. Baez is in sizzling form from home plate. Having put together a .316 season so far, Baez already has a home run and four RBIs to his name.

The original plan was reportedly to rest Baez for the series against the Royals before fielding him to play against the New York Yankees on Tuesday. However, that plan seems to have seen a change instead.

Willi Toledo has been called up from Triple-A instead and is expected to be the shortstop’s replacement on the roster while he recovers. Meanwhile, Harold Castro is expected to field the shortstop’s role in the Tigers’ games until Baez returns.

Moreover, speaking as to the decision to backdate his placement, manager AJ Finch had some thoughts. Said Finch, “You can only go back three days, so to [backdate the move] to Wednesday to allow him to potentially come back next Saturday, we needed to make the decision today.”

The objective seems to be to get Baez back as soon as possible, potentially even as soon as next Saturday. So while Tigers fans may be sad at his absence; perhaps they can take solace in the fact that he is set to return soon.
