The New York Yankees are a legacy team in baseball. With one of the most faithful and longest-standing fanbases in the world, it’s not uncommon to see the Yankees see such a display from players too. And with another Yankees veteran in the wings, the list may just have one more addition. Brett Gardener has reportedly put up his intention to sign with the Yankees again in 2022 and don the pinstripes yet again.

Brett Gardener is among the longest-tenured players on the New York Yankees; he could well be headed back to the Bronx. There are only a few remaining players that have only taken the diamond for a single team through their career and in that respect, it seems as though Gardner is a remnant from an era past. However, with the outfielder having completed 14 seasons on the Yankees, there is something to be said about the experience too.

Brett Gardener – veteran leadership?

While reportedly, Gardener has been made a mascot for the New York Yankees’ failure to move on from an era that has passed, he could well be headed back to the Bronx. Writing for the New York Post, Joel Sherman spoke about the possibility of a returning Gardner.

Reportedly, the player would be more than happy to bookend his New York career with a year in pinstripes. Speaking to his long-time agent, Sherman confirmed as much. Although brief, Gardener’s agent Joe Bick responded with a reassured one word via text message when asked if Gardener would like to return to the Yankees in 2022. “Yes”, wrote Bick.

Could Gardener switch to other teams?

Bick mentioned that Gardner would be more than happy to stay back in Yankee Stadium in 2022. “Yes, he would obviously prefer to stay with the New York Yankees for the entirety of his career,” added Joe.

However, in typical agent fashion, Bick has also kept the door on any future moves ajar. Maintaining that the 38-year-old wanted to remain as an active player in 2022 and would sign with teams across the league but preferred to stay at Yankee Stadium.

Gardener is an elder statesman on the Yankees squad; although declining performance could be an able replacement in what appears to be a lockout-shortened season in 2022. But what do you think? Could Gardener slot in on the Yankees for just a season? Or do you think he is better suited to take his talents to another team?
