No one can fault the Mets’ attempts this season. With the free-agent acquisitions they have undertaken prior to the 2022 season, and the front office hires they have made, the Mets look set to win. Now all they have to do is prove it. And an integral part of the set-up also includes several coaching hires that the Queens franchise saw come in.

And perhaps one of the most crucial pieces of the puzzle was with Eric Chavez, who switched from the Bronx in less than 7 days from his appointment for a promotion at Citi Field. Chavez’s addition to the Mets’ roster will hopefully see a bump in where the Mets need some help.

The New York Mets undertook one of the best off-season hires of the season in Eric Chavez only a week after the Yankees had confirmed him. Reportedly, the Yankees were following an unwritten rule in baseball. A rule that states if someone is allowed a promotion, you let them go. Turns out, the Mets’ good fortune truly knew no bounds, and Chavez was bought on as an assistant coach.

Sounding increasingly like a certain franchise, Chavez expressed certain reservations with a lineup that concentrates on power hitting and exit velocity over strikeouts and batting averages. A blockbuster franchise, the New York Yankees definitely value their power hitters. Could this have been a possible culture mismatch? There isn’t a way to tell for sure, but here are the facts.

Chavez is now an assistant coach at the New York Mets. And he seems to want to author a complete turnaround of the Queens franchise. Setting down the law early, he has made know what he wants. And it’s definitely not what has been prevalent in the league so far.

“The strikeouts and the .190 batting averages kind of seem to be acceptable and the norm. And I just don’t think that’s how you build winning teams, ” he added.

We certainly hope that Chavez looks to the Mets with hope and turns around the franchise, as we are sure several Queens residents do! The occupants of Citi Field are long overdue a season where they could cheer for their Mets.
