Ben Verlander’s biggest claim to fame might be in his name right now, but that’s up for change. The sportscaster is recently making waves with his newest flurry of tweets. After having recently expressed his dissatisfaction with the exclusion of Barry Bonds into the Hall of Fame, Verlander went on to make some salacious accusations.

He was also quick to add ‘allegedly’ onto the pieces to make sure they weren’t flagged. Claiming that Babe Ruth was somehow involved in the passing of his wife is clearly a problem. But how Verlander did it was perhaps more entertaining for bystanders.

Babe Ruth is considered by many to be the greatest of all time. With an induction into Cooperstown in 1932, Ruth’s name already will carry on and so will his legacy. As a New York Yankee, Ruth set the league alight with his home runs and was perhaps one of the most able power hitters to grace the game. And yet, Verlander chanced upon the most targetable quality of a man who has an impeccable professional record; His personal life.

“Woke up thinking about how Babe Ruth set his poor wife Helen on fire yet the moral gate keepers are keeping Barry Bonds, the greatest hitter of all time, out of the Hall of Fame,” he wrote.

This attracted sufficient ire from baseball Twitter and even got into some very dangerous territory. Verlander added the “allegedly” to his tweet only some time after the original tweet had been up on the site.

Apparently, according to Verlander, Ruth’s wife, Helen, had passed away in a house fire in January 1929. And while it was allegedly never reported as to what the reason for the start of the fire was, the main theory was a lit cigarette. Going on Verlander, in a screenshot that he posted, stated how Ruth married Claire in April of the same year.

Verlander lacks the facts to back up his claim?

While there was absolutely no record to support any such claims or any fact to back them up, Verlander seems to be sticking to his story. Fans, albeit fact-checked the sportscaster and have also posted their findings online.

And while neither source has been verified as off now, the story remains muddy as to why the conversation turned to this. Verlander’s attempt to speak out about Bonds’ exclusion from the Hall of Fame seems to have led him into a new story altogether. And while entertaining for short stretches, maybe the question of the responsibility of pundits arises here. What do you think?
