The New York Yankees are one of the oldest and most historic franchises in baseball. With a winning record to rival none and has been a part of the fabric of baseball for close to 2 centuries, the Bronx Bombers represent a baseball lineage. And former MLB star, Cameron Maybin spoke about exactly that as he opened up about the pressure that playing in the Bronx brings and how he was able to make the most of it.

Cameron Maybin has enjoyed a storied career in MLB. Turning out for several franchises over his 15 years in the league, Maybin turned out for the New York Yankees in 2019 and enjoyed a fairly successful run in New York. Slugging 68 home runs in 239 at-bats, it was certainly one of Maybin’s more productive seasons in MLB. And he explains that a big part of it might have been the extra pressure that the pinstripes bring with them.

The New York Yankees – a different ball-game?

Speaking on commentary while the New York Yankees took on the Detroit Tigers in spring training; Maybin sure seemed to believe that his year on the New York Yankees had him performing at a different level than the rest of his career. Said Maybin, “The pinstripes bought something different out of me.”

And that something different could just have been the pressure; the pressure that playing for a storied franchise the likes of the New York Yankees brings. Maybin seemed to recognize this all too well; especially when he spoke about donning the pinstripes and playing his first game in the Yankee Stadium. And perhaps the pressure cannot compare to other franchises across MLB.

“The material weighs a little bit more than any other uniform,” said Maybin, “the expectation and pressure that comes with those pinstripes, that bought the best out of me.” For some athletes, it’s the pressure that gets them performing to the best of their capabilities. And what can be more exciting than playing for a team with 27 titles in their history? The ‘winning-est’ team in baseball, if you will.

Maybin added, however, that pressure wasn’t the only thing that the players could look to for getting a performance; but it certainly was with the New York Yankees. “And that’s why not everybody is made to play in the Yankee uniform and it holds true I believe that,” he added.
