However, Trevor May of the New York Mets that there is something much bigger afoot. And that the League could be ready to sacrifice more for a ‘long-term plan.’

The New York Mets pitcher recently appeared on the Chris Rose Rotation podcast. He opened up about his thoughts on the recent MLB negotiations. As with most negotiations, both sides would likely to be having clear objectives or set dates as fail-safes. However, May believes that the League and the players are fundamentally different in this aspect. May spoke about how the League might even be willing to sacrifice some games this season; to make sure that the next four and a half years of the collective bargaining agreement are beneficial to them.

Trevor May speaks out about the League’s negotiation tactics
May displayed very little confidence in the talks between MLB and the MLBPA. However, if no deal is reached by Friday, the league stands to lose games. Which at this point seems to be inevitable. The pitcher for the New York Mets also did not seem particularly bullish about the league not losing any games.

Caveating his statement with the fact that he had no insider information, May went on to opine regarding the situation.” But just knowing from the last two years of how the Commissioner’s Office generally just handles anything that they want to do, they have a pretty long term plan laid out.“, said May.

May spoke about how this may be a negotiation with some moving parts. Speaking about the League’s stance on the subject, May explained that there might be some short-term sacrifices to ensure revenue in the longer term.

A matter of ‘leverage’?
May was of the opinion that commissioner Manfred has put together an altogether greater plan. The thinking could be that, “I think that’ll give us this much leverage”, said May.

“If we’re willing to sacrifice this many games it’ll make us this much more money in the next four and a half years of the CBA,” he added. And maybe that’s why the negotiations seem to be dragging so.
