Max Scherzer is one of baseball’s finest pitchers, and he has the resume to match. With 3 Cy Youngs already adorning his trophy cabinet, he may well start 2022 intending to add another. Even at age 37, his skills seem to defy his age, as experience only adds to his quiver. However, few can stand against the case for Scherzer hitting his peak when he was on the Washington Nationals, and they know it too. As he came to visit for Opening Day as a part of the Mets, Scherzer was well received at Nationals Park.

Scherzer may have switched teams in the 2022 off-season, but it seems as though the pitcher has captured the imagination of his former teams too. Having won the World Series as their starting pitcher, Scherzer clearly has to have a great time while with the Nationals. Winning 2 Cy Youngs while there certainly wouldn’t have hurt his case as an all-time great. And the Nationals love him for it.

Scherzer switched contracts to make his way to the New York Mets on a bumper Three year $130 million deal in the 2022 off-season, but the Nationals still hang on to the memories he has created with them. Making his way to the Nationals in 2015, Scherzer put together some world-beating appearances as he made his way into Nationals Park. Of his roughly six seasons spent with the Nationals, Scherzer turned in All-Star appearances in 5 of them. Even in his final season with the Nationals, which saw him make a mid-season switch to the Dodgers, he recorded stats worthy of an All-Star appearance.

And the respect for his skills clearly shows from the Washington Nationals. He put together 2 NL Cy Young winning seasons with the franchise and even led them to the 2019 World Series to win it all. There clearly is some mutual respect between the two, even as Scherzer now makes his way to Queens to don the Mets’ uniform. And one fan just added why that might be.
