Watch: New York Yankees Pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. Scores an Immaculate Inning

New York Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. got an immaculate inning to his name. This was the first immaculate inning of the MLB 2022 season. So far there have been 106 immaculate innings in the MLB. The first-ever immaculate inning took place back in 1889. In the MLB 2021 season, 5 players completed immaculate innings.

Completing an immaculate inning is one of the highest achievements for any pitcher playing in the MLB. On April 17th, 2022, Nestor Cortes Jr. of the New York Yankees scored the first immaculate inning of the MLB 2022 season. Before Cortes Jr., former Los Angeles Dodger, Max Scherzer scored an immaculate inning in September 2021. But to much of a disappointment for Cortes Jr., the Yankees lost the game against the Baltimore Orioles ending 5-0.

April 17th, 2022, was probably a day New York Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. will not forget. His immaculate inning was the 4th inning of the game. In the entire game, Cortes Jr. scored 12 strikeouts, which became his career-high. In the 4th Inning, Cortes Jr struck out Anthony Santander, Ryan McKenna, and Robinson Chirinos to complete an immaculate inning.

In an interview after the game, a delighted Nestor Cortes Jr., said, “It’s fun to be out there every single time when you’re on a roll like that. It just makes it a little sweeter. It’s unfortunate we didn’t come out with a ‘W’ today. Early on, I was having a little trouble gripping the ball with the wind and how dry it was out there. After the third inning, I was on a roll, commanding every pitch for strikes.”

Even Aaron Boone, the manager of the New York Yankees, had a few words to say about Cortes Jr.
Boone said, “He was pretty special. Another really strong outing by Nestor. He really dialed in his command, and I thought the stuff was good. You always want to see your guys rewarded when they perform really well, and he did.”

It was really sad that despite having one of the best days of his life, Nestor Cortes Jr. and the Yankees had to suffer a loss.
