Carlos Correa is the star of the 2022 off-season. With only a few superstar shortstops available on the market, teams will need to act quickly to reserve their elite services. But as the lockout lumbers on and the regular season gets close, Correa’s value rises further. Two teams remain in contention for the shortstop, with both destinations likely to be big paydays.

Both the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs have expressed their desire to sign Carlos Correa. And while both teams are in need of a shortstop, they both have their problems as well. The question that remains is where does Correa go? But perhaps before we look into that, we can look into where he came from.

Early Days

While the star is 27 now, he was drafted by the Houston Astros when he was much younger. Moreover, recently, clips have emerged from when he was 18 from the Astros set-up that scouted him in the first place. Correa went 1st in the 2012 MLB draft and made his debut in 2015 against the Chicago White Sox.

The footage shows Correa as he is 18, starting with a few at bats and really slugging the ball. The footage also captures Correa practicing some fielding drills on the diamond. And while a lot may have changed about the star (in terms of net worth), the man still has the same gun arm.

The footage was clearly indicative of the all-star that Correa was going to grow to be. However, some fans observed a few changes to his game from then.

The MLB star clearly had potential even then and while not many could have predicted his level of success with the Astros, he surely was a top prospect.

Carlos Correa – Free agent

Correa seems to be enjoying the 2022 off-season. Being the most sought-after free agent, he has clearly indicated what he needs to sign with a team. He seems to be looking for a 10 year deal with a financial commitment of $325 million or more.

The deal seems to be in line with the one that Corey Seager signed with the Texas Rangers. Correa is looking to switch teams and while both the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs have expressed their interest, they may both have some concerns.

Chicago’s primary concern seems to be that the deal may yet be asking for too long a commitment from the Cubs. The Wrigley Field front office seems to be after a 7 year deal but Correa is likely to push for a 10 year contract. With the Yankees, on the other hand, the finances might be a holdup.

With Aaron Judge seeing the end of his contract, the Yankees will need to keep some of their strength liquid if they want to re-sign. And tying up Correa to a mega deal may well see them not able to do that.

At the end of the day, in either case, Correa seems to be resting knowing that he will have the best possible deal in the MLB. As it should be. Undoubtedly, that 18-year-old prospect in the scouting videos would be proud.
