The Carlos Correa transfer saga may finally be winding down, but with a conclusion, almost no one had expected. Despite discussions of his eventual destination ranging from getting transferred onto a contending team for 2022 like the Chicago Cubs or the New York Yankees, Correa will turn out for the Twins in 2022. And the reason for his decision may be stranger than you first thought it to be. It could be his agent, Scott Boras.

Carlos Correa has had a great season in 2021 and he showcases perhaps one of the greatest performance portfolios when it comes to displays in MLB in his free agency class. With above-par offensive displays and a trophy cabinet housing the World Series title, he certainly commands tremendous value.

And it was perhaps that reason that people expected him to join a contender in 2022. However, it looks to be that instead of Correa joining a contender, he has entered the Twins to make them a contender instead.

Why did Carlos Correa join the Twins?

The Twitter-verse exploded early on Saturday morning as news started to stream in about Correa’s switch to the Twins instead of the pursuing pack of teams after him in free agency. But the reason for his switch to a relatively unexpected contender could well lie with his agent fees on the back of such a switch.

Reportedly, the way the agreements and agent contracts are structured, they would have had Correa’s previous agency making a majority of their signing amount. That is, if he was to secure his big contract in the off-season of 2022. However, if this was just a year removed and to occur in the winter next year instead, Boras would be in a position to reap the rewards of the new big contract.

Minnesota Twins – now contenders?

The Twins, now suddenly with recent acquisitions, may jump to the fore of discussions in terms of title contentions with their recent moves in the market. Having acquired some key pieces from the New York Yankees and with the assured services of Carlos Correa for a year, they could well look to make a push for silverware this season.

Correa’s contract is reportedly a 3-year engagement with 2 opt-outs in the latter part of his contract. Both of which he will likely be looking to activate if he is looking to cement his legacy. And while success is not assured this season, the Twins are bound to see a bump in popularity and viewership with the new signings announced.
